Spoiler alert! Google’s latest project will protect you from those pesky TV, movie and book spoilers. How often have you read someone’s status and found out a important plot twist in a movie or TV show you were looking forward to enjoying?
Through an automated filter, you can avoid ruining the season finale of your favorite show or the ending of that movie you couldn’t wait to see. It seems only right that Google do something to prevent this from happening, especially because of how easy it is to come across these spoilers during a routine Google search. With our age of constant, streaming social media, it has become almost unavoidable to stay away from spoilers.
Google received a patent on the miraculous filter from the U.S. Patent Trademark Office on Tuesday. The complicated documents of the patent basically explain how the filter would work. It could scan your seemingly endless social media feed for any potential spoilers and monitor your progress on certain books, television shows and movies using certain devices, such as e-readers.
You would also be able to override the censored spoiler. After a warning, you could access the information, if you really wanted to.
Despite the patent, the future of the filter is unclear. Some at Google believe it will never materialize.
“We hold patents on a variety of ideas — some of those ideas later mature into real products or services, some don’t,” a Google spokeswoman said. “Prospective product announcements should not necessarily be inferred from our patents.”
Only time will tell. Until then, use social media with caution or at least empty your DVR before logging on…
