In 2004 Kevin Rose founded Digg.com, one of the first and largest news aggregator websites in the world. At the height of the company’s success they were witnessing almost 16 million unique visitors per month but now with just 8.2 million monthly unique visitors Rose has revealed that he doesn’t use the site for his own browsing needs.
According to a Tweet Rose recently sent:
“My tech news reading behaviors have changed, I click @techmeme browse their tweets, then click out from there.”
While Rose founded the news aggregator he never really look much of an active management position with the site, instead hiring Jay Adelson and eventually bringing on-board Amazon.com executive Matt Williams to replace Jay.
Rose is now busy at work with Milk, a website that asks developers to bring their mobile application ideas to the company for quick creation. Rose admits that most of the programs on Milk will likely fail, however just a few Angry Bird type applications could mean huge business for the company.
In the meantime I wonder if Rose every logs onto Reddit, after all that site now has 14 million unique visitors according to Quantcast and they continue to siphon off Digg users at breakneck speeds.
Rose isn’t completely absent from the site, he did ask users if they wanted the “Bury” button back on the Digg website after removing the button angered site users.
In any case it’s pretty sad when the creator of a website doesn’t even want to use the site.
Are you still using Digg for your aggregated browsing needs?
