Danica Patrick is the first NASCAR driver to have more than one million Twitter followers. She hit the mark in the days leading up to Sunday’s season-opening Daytona 500, though Twitter newbie Dale Jr. could catch up quickly.
Before the race, Patrick told the Associated Press, “It just shows what incredible and loyal fans I have. It’s pretty humbling that 1 million people are curious about what I have to say and what I’m doing. I really can’t thank everyone enough for their passion and interest.”
She also thanked her longtime personal sponsor TISSOT for getting her started with the social network, and GoDaddy, her NASCAR sponsor, for letting her be “organic, real and fun” on Twitter.
Along with beating out her fellow NASCAR drivers, Danica’s 1 million followers put her in the top among female athletes. She now has more fans on the site than Lindsey Vonn, Mia Hamm, and Anna Kournikova. Still, she is a long way from catching up to Serena Williams and her 4 million followers.
While Danica Patrick has continued to see harsh criticism from die-hard NASCAR fans who say she hasn’t earned her ride in the sport’s top series, she is very popular among casual sports fans and her loyal supporters.
