Usually, the blue-collar industry is a male-dominated environment since most of the work there can be considered as “dirty jobs.” However, times are changing now especially in some countries and women have proven that sexist standards when it comes to jobs are outdated. One woman did, and she is a beautiful and successful plumber.

A 30-year-old mother of one, Carly Gayle from the UK is not like most moms. That’s because she has been working as a plumber for 15 years. She owes a lot to her father who introduced her into the family business and this eventually led to Carly having quite a unique career choice for someone her gender. Here she is:

Now, Carly is quite the successful plumber; she makes £36,000 ($47,000) per year all from her plumbing career. Despite such success in the blue-collar work, Carly feels that she still has to contend with society’s sexist standards. Often, people doubt her skills as a plumber due to her gender.

“People have said ‘Where’s the man?’ when I’ve turned up at jobs before, and I’ve also had people not believe I’m qualified or actually able to do the job. There’s been other times I’ve been in B&Q in my normal clothes with my handbag, looking at tools – knowing exactly what I’m looking for – and have had groups of lads come up to me and say ‘Don’t hurt yourself darling,'” claimed Carly. Such sentiments also made her thick-skinned.

Still, despite some of her customers’ sexist standards for plumbers, there also some who appreciate what she’s doing. She even had one customer who praised her appearance, saying she “looks like a model” and not a plumber. Carly did thank her intensive labor work as a plumber for keeping her in shape, hence her fit look.

Carly is now happily married to her husband Danny, who is also a blue-collar employee and factory worker. Despite some people accepting her as a female plumber, Carly believes society still has a long way to go for genuine gender equality and abolition of sexist standards. Thankfully, she’s there to lead the way for other women in the same field.
