Geraldo Rivera has long since been one of FOX News’ confrontation-oriented newscasters. He reported live from a squad-protected line in Baltimore Thursday evening when he spotted a man seemingly raising his voice in protest. Rivera had a few scathing remarks of his own to throw, challenging the man and turning the camera on him. “What’s you problem? You’re only brave when the camera is turned?” He dropped the bite with one sentence: “Hey you anarchist, you’re nothing, you ain’t nothing!”
What was not aired on the new report was a young protesting stepping up and confronting Rivera on his intentions for being there. What happens next is painful to watch.
This as-of-yet unidentified protestor has laid out many excellent points in front of the FOX reporter — what’s painful to watch is how Rivera has slunk away at every opportunity with a grin plastered on his face and a blatant refusal to pay attention written all over.
“But you’re here for the black riots that happen,” The protester said. “You’re not here for the death of Freddie Gray.”
The reporter later on dismissed this man as nothing more than a “vandal”. “You’re just making a fool of yourself,” Rivera criticized him as he finally came on air.
He further mentioned in an interview with Maryland state Senate Majority Leader Catherine E. Pugh that “it seems like they want trouble”. Pugh quickly countered, “They don’t want trouble,” before accusing his media cohorts of inciting a crowd into violence for a news report.
Hip-hop veteran artist Killer Mike recently published an Op-Ed about his own views on the confrontation between Geraldo Rivera and the protester that evening on the streets. He opines that Rivera was not evading the statements sent his way out of arrogance, but out of shame. “This half-Hispanic, half-Jewish man who comes from two different communities, who knows what poverty and oppression can do, could have said, ‘I want to know the real story.’ … I turned away from the TV with far less respect for him — if I were introduced to him today, I’d walk away. Not because they’re evil and bad people, but because they’re players in the game that sensationalizes and objectifies this in the worst ways — I don’t trust they that they want to see the change. ”
