Amandla Sternberg Calls Out Kylie Jenner on Cultural Appropriation

Amandla Sternberg is taking none of your BS, specially when it comes to cultural appropriation.

The 16-year-old actress who played Rue in the first “Hunger Games” movie wasn’t too happy about Kylie Jenner’s recent Instagram post. The youngest of the Kardashian-Jenner family posed in a mirror selfie with her cornrows and the caption, “I woke up like disss.”

Sternberg commented on the photo, saying that Jenner was appropriating “black features and culture” without using her privilege and power to raise awareness and support for the concerns of the black community. (What is privilege, you ask? Here’s a a video from Buzzfeed to educate you. Go on, it’s good for you.)

Sternberg also employed the hashtag #whitegirlsdoitbetter, an offensive hashtag that activists took over and eventually backfired on its target audience.

To which Kylie responded with: “Mad if I don’t, mad if I do…Go hang w Jaden or something.”

An insult, which, kind of isn’t. Because have you seen how fly Amandla and Jaden were at the prom? For reals.

Amandla wasn’t done yet. She uploaded a screencap of a thoughtful post she wrote addressing the lasting and damaging effects of stereotypes surrounding black women’s sexuality and femininity.

This hasn’t been the first time a young black woman has rightfully stood up for her heritage. Earlier Zendaya Coleman released a statement on wearing her locs on the Oscar red carpet, and addressing the hurtful comments by a fashion reporter.
