[UPDATE: Sadly, Adrian Peterson’s son has passed away. The Vikings running back took to Twitter to thank his fans for all of their support.]

Adrian Peterson received some horrible news this week: One of his sons was left in critical condition after he was reportedly beaten by an adult.

According to TwinCities.com, Peterson’s 2-year-old son is currently in critical condition at a hospital in South Dakota. The boy was reportedly attacked by Joseph Robert Patterson, 27, who had been dating the child’s mother.

Peterson’s father Nelson confirmed that the little boy was Adrian Peterson’s son. Nelson said that the boy was not Adrian Jr. but did say that it was one of his grandsons.

ESPN reports that Peterson was given the day off today by the Vikings to attend a “personal matter.” Neither the Vikings nor the NFL have commented on the situation.

There is some debate as to whether or not the little boy is actually Adrian Peterson’s son. The child was not known to the public and police have not confirmed the identity of the little boy’s parents.

What is known, however, is that a 27-year-old man was arrested for beating a 2-year-old child. Patterson was charged with aggravated assault, aggravated assault on an infant, and, unfortunately, may soon be charged with murder. City Pages reports that “the child is not expected to survive his injuries.”
