Adrian Peterson reached out to his fans and teammates today to thank them for their support shortly after his infant son passed away at a South Dakota hospital.

Peterson’s two-year-old son was taken to the hospital this morning after he was severely beaten by Joseph Robert Patterson, 27. Patterson, who was dating the boy’s mother, has been arrested for aggravated assault and will most likely be charged with murder.

The Minnesota Vikings running back said earlier today that he plans on playing football this Sunday. It’s unclear if those plans have changed now that his son has passed away.

But let’s not talk about football right now.

Fans and teammates have been tweeting messages of support to Peterson all day and a few minutes ago the NFL star responded.

Adrian Peterson met with the media today a few hours before his son passed away. At the time, the Vikings running back said that playing football helps him through tough times.

Peterson said: “You know, football is something I will always fall back on. It gets me through tough times. Just being around the guys in here, that’s what I need in my life, guys supporting me and just being able to go out and play this game I love. Things that I go through, I’ve said a thousand times, it helps me play this game to a different level. I’m able to kind of release a lot of my stress through this sport, so that’s what I plan on doing.”
