True crime is having a renaissance. From hugely popular documentaries like Making a Murderer and The Staircase taking over Netflix, to podcasts such as Serial and S-Town, people can’t seem to get enough of real-life murder and mayhem.
So, when a member of the Washington State police force asked the internet for help in solving a fatal hit-and-run, it was the perfect opportunity for true crime buffs to shine.
Officer Johnna Batiste tweeted a photograph of a car part from an automobile believed to have killed a cyclist, asking people for any information on the accident. She also included a snap of the bike involved, which was badly damaged in the collision.

Eventually, news of the Officer’s search reached Reddit, where users tried to track down the car part. It wasn’t long before an eagle-eyed redditor attributed the piece to a Chevy K-10 truck. A former Maryland state inspector, who goes by the username JeffNuts, identified the headlamp as a bezel belonging to a 1988 Chevy Silvarado, and within a few days an arrest for the crime had been made.
Officer Batiste tweeted the good news, and no one could believe the ex-inspector had solved the crime from just the one photo.
