When President Barack Obama and GOP presidential hopeful Mitt Romney met for their second debate on Tuesday night Twitter engagement was way down. While the first debate witnessed 10.3 million tweets the second debate experienced only 7.2 million debate geared Tweets.
While those numbers at first site might signal a decrease in social engagement, analysis from tracking group Attention found that social network engagement was higher during the second debates with a 31% level. That engagement level is a high since Attention began tracking debate talk in March. According to the group engagement was at just 20% during the first debate.
Twitter engagement may have been down but the group says Facebook engagement was up to 40% on Tuesday night. During the first debate engagement numbers were 77% to 6% in favor of Twitter.
In its analysis Attention notes:
“Since messages on Twitter tend to be one-sided and immediate, it is harder to engage with in a meaningful way … The increased mentions on Facebook indicates conversations and, accordingly, debates.”
Some of that engagement could also be caused by the “Binders Full of Women” Facebook page which grabbed 260,000 “likes” overnight.
Among its analysis were Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Tumblr, blogs, news websites and other online sources.
My personal Facebook feed blew up with debate conversations on Tuesday night, perhaps what it all boils down to is increased attention being paid to the 2nd debate now that the presidential election is only weeks away.
