YouTube Celebrates 57th Birthday Of VHS Tapes

Tape Mode Celebration for YouTube

Do you miss the old school days of VHS tapes? Yeah us either. However, that has not stopped YouTube from celebrating the release of the Ampex VRX-1000, the first commercially available video cassette recorder.

The new feature is available today on select videos and can be spotted by a VHS button on the bottom bar of a YouTube video.

Clicking the VHS button turns your high quality 1080p video into a fuzzy VHS version. Sure degrading video isn’t what we want but it’s a fun feature to try out.

On it’s Google+ page YouTube writes:

Not too long ago, the video tape was the media of choice for living rooms around the world. In celebration of the 57th birthday of the first commercial video cassette recorder, check out a fun VHS mode for the YouTube player to relive the magic feel of vintage video tapes.

To check out the new feature click on the YouTube icon in the bottom right hand cover of this video to visit its YouTube page (VHS mode doesn’t work for embedded videos):

Try “Tape mode” today and let us know what you think.
