Yahoo Gets Social With New Homepage

Yahoo! has been losing market share over the last few years but the company took a step forward today with its new redesign. The Yahoo! homepage is now more modern, more social, and more sleek, according to its CEO Marissa Mayer.

Mayer writes:

“Designed to be more intuitive and personal, the new Yahoo! experience is all about your interests and preferences. Since streams of information have become the paradigm of choice on the web, we’re introducing a newsfeed with infinite scroll, letting you experience a virtually endless feed of news articles. Whether you are a sports fanatic or entertainment buff, you can easily customize your newsfeed to your interests. And, to make Yahoo! even more social, you can log in with your Yahoo! or Facebook ID to get articles from thousands of news sources as well as those shared by your friends.”

Yahoo articles now have a share button directly on the home page (for Twitter, Facebook and email) and the “Social Activity” tab pulls in updates from your friends on Facebook and Twitter. The new homepage also features Facebook Birthdays, Picassa photos, and an endless stream of stories on your favorite topics.

B. Riley Caris analyst Sameet Sinha told Reuters that the new design will strengthen Yahoo’s relationship with Facebook.

Sinha said:

“This is definitely an important step. The Yahoo home page is one of the most important things because it is the first interface. It’s familiar in terms of layout, the newsfeed is interesting, and it will be interesting to see how it develops over time. The key will be how data is aggregated within Yahoo and Facebook.”

Mayer said that she’d be monitoring the feedback on the new design in order to make more improvements. According to the Yahoo! CEO, today is “just the beginning.”

What do you think of the redesign? Do you like the social stream? The ability to share directly from the homepage?

  1. I have been a user of Yahoo ever since it debued and although I have tried other search home pages I always come back to Yahoo. If I have any problems with anything it would have to be the big brother aspect of facebook. It drives me crazy that you can't do any type of online commerce today with out facebook trying to have you make them a part of the transaction. And unless I have misread the stories incorrectly there is a proposal of seamless intergration between Yahoo and facebook. I went to my dentist the other day and found out his practice wants to be "liked" on facebook. Even this comment has the option to be posted on facebook.
