Spain’s new gagging law was invoked in the fining of a woman who uploaded a picture of an illegally parked police vehicle.
he highly controversial Citizens’ Security Law, which went into effect across Spain in July, was invoked in the fining of a woman who uploaded a picture of a police vehicle to Facebook. The law, which limits where and when political demonstrations may be held, is intended to curtail the protests and sit-ins brought about by the country’s economic crisis. It also prevents “the unauthorized use of images of police officers that might jeopardize their or their family’s safety or that of protected facilities or police operations.”
The picture shows a police vehicle illegally parked in a handicapped (disabled) space, along with the caption: “Park where you bloody well please and you won’t even be fined.”
A number of critics have pointed out that the woman, who was fined €800 for her actions, didn’t “jeopardize [police] or their family’s safety” in any way, and complain the new law is being used for what many in Spain feared—silencing and censorship. Police stated the car was parked in the handicapped spot because the officers were rushing to an incident of vandalism in the area. Reportedly, police also felt their “honor” was being called into question by the post.
If the idea of a policeman ‘avenging his honor’ after being called out for parking illegally sounds ridiculous, imagine how the Spaniards are feeling.
