WeChat, a popular messaging service in China owned by Tencent, says it is worth no less than $60 billion since it has more revenue streams than WhatsApp. Asia Investment banking company CLSA says the valuation for WeChat this year is between $35 billion and $64 billion.
Elinor Leung and Terry Chen, two analysts have made the case that WeChat should be valued at two to three times the value of WhatsApp because WeChat can generate revenues from mobile games, ecommerce, mobile payment, advertising, and Internet financing.
Although WeChat has more revenue streams, it has less users – about 300 million compared to WhatsApp’s 465 million.
Additionally, Tencent has invested in making acquisitions such as Dianping and JD to ensure future business opportunities. Tencent believes WeChat will reach 450 million users by the end of the year with each subscriber worth about $142.
WeChat has launched an app called Red Envelope for peer-to-peer ‘real money’ transfers and taxi apps which it is integrating with WeChat.
Users can complete transactions such as red envelopes, subscription purchases, and paying bills by registering their credit card, bank, or debit card account details with WeChat and entering a password verification code sent by Tencent through SMS.
