Twitter users had a bit of a scare yesterday after a rumored security breach. To protect accounts, Twitter issued a password reset to many users. Given that users received a random email about resetting their password, it seemed a bit odd. However, we reported that the emails were in fact legitimate.
Despite the potential scare, Twitter claims that they were not hacked. Their reasoning is this: As part of the security policy, it will regularly reset passwords to accounts that are believed to have been compromised and pose a threat to others. That means the user will receive an email regarding the matter.
This time around, something happened in the system that caused it to reset far more passwords than intended. Twitter was quick to apologize about the whole ordeal. While that may be the case, many users saw spam tweets sent out from their account.
Whatever happened, accounts were clearly compromised and even such sites as Mashable and TechCrunch experienced issues with their accounts. Spammers managed to post a tweet through TechCrunch saying, “Make $250 A Day From Home,” followed by a link to a very sketchy website.
Twitter still stands behind its claim and with the password reset, any accounts that were affected are now in the clear.
