Twitter Aims To Dominate Internet Music With ‘We Are Hunted’ Acquisition

We Are Hunted

Twitter is rumored to have purchased music discovery service We Are Hunted in late 2012 and is now believed to be preparing a standalone music player for the internet.

Known as Twitter Music the app will be released for iOS users by the end of the month according to several reports.

The platform integrates with Twitter, allowing users to stream music based on the musician accounts they follow on the micro-blogging platform.

Twitter plans to stream songs to the app via the SoundCloud platform.

Pop stars are some of Twitter’s biggest power users and bringing their music directly to the platforms singer following makes a lot of sense. In some cases pop stars on Twitter have managed to attract fans by the tens of millions.

Twitter Music hasn’t launched yet but the @TwitterMusic account already has more than 2.3 million followers.

Twitter and We Are The Hunted reps have not responded to the acquisition, a partnership or any other details that will likely surface in the coming days.

The app is not expected to require an active Twitter account, although attaching it to an account will help users discover new and favorite music.

Twitter Music has been under testing by We Are Hunted co-founder Stephen Phillips who sent the following test tweet:

The app will feature at least four tabs, two of which offer ‘Popular’ songs that are trending on Twitter and ‘Emerging’ songs which show tracks from up-and-coming artists.

The Twitter Music app will focus its music discover on We Are Hunted technology which understands music discovered on an intimate level. We Are Hunted quickly became a favorite among audiophiles and has raised at least $3 million since launching to the public on April 17, 2009.

More details to follow as they are released.
