Tumblr To Display Mobile Ads In First Half Of 2013

Mobile Ads Coming To Tumblr

Tumblr mobile ads will soon make their way to users smartphones and tablets. Less than one year after Tumblr debuted its $1 post promotion platform the company is now eyeing its first ever profitable quarter.

Speaking with Bloomberg, Derek Gottfrid, vice president of product at Tumblr, revealed that the company will debut mobile ads before the first half of 2013 draws to a close. According to Gottfrid the new mobile ads will appear on both Apple iOS and Google Android based smartphones.

To prepare for Tumblr mobile ads the social blogging platform is seeking out partners for its new mobile advertising platform.

Tumblr is currently experiencing three times more growth on its mobile platform than its desktop option. With such huge growth the company’s need to make money has placed it in a position where mobile ads are not just wanted, they are needed.

Speaking last month to Mashable Tumblr founder and CEO David Karp said the company shouldn’t have a hard time monetizing for mobile:

“On Tumblr there are no special brand pages, there are no Sponsored Stories,” Karp said. “There are blogs and there are posts. So as long as there are those elements and our mobile apps are getting better and better at displaying those atomic elements… We should be able to inject advertisements there in a way that’s really not distruptive and not interruptive.”

The average ad buy on Tumblr is “just under six figures” and with a growing base of 170 million users the company, if it plays its cards right, should be able to monetize those users very quickly via mobile ads.
