Trump Caves on Concentration Camps, But Everything Is Still Awful

Bowing to incredible, society-wide pressure, Donald Trump today announced that he would scale back his brutal, inhuman immigration policy of forcibly separating the children of immigrants from their families. This decision comes after huge public pressure, both online and in person. A group shut down a detention center—or rather, one of the concentration camps—in Portland with peaceful protest, hundreds took to the street across the country, and news papers lit up with outrages screeds against the policy.

Allow me to illustrate Trumps’ though process throughout this week with a small play I have composed for your pleasure.

Trump: I’m going to beat children with a stick

Me, a Normal Person: Hey don’t do that

T: I’m not doing that

Me: I’m watching you do it?

T: Democrats are forcing me too

T: Okay fine I won’t pummel children anymore. We’ll just imprison everyone indefinitely in concentration camps. Will that make you happy?

Me: No, that’s still bad!

T: Well I can’t beat children with a stick, I can’t imprison families indefinitely… It’s like you don’t even care about securing our country’s borders!

Plenty of folks online have shared their outrage as well, calling for compassion for these children.

This is one of those things that feels so crazy to even have to stand against. Of course we shouldn’t put kids in concentration camps? How do people get to be adults and think that’s cool? I wonder if they teach their kids to be kind and respectful while advocating for mass imprisonment to dissuade future immigrants. Good chance their Christians too who say things like “What Would Jesus Do” and somehow think the answer is “treat children terrible.” Maybe they were sick one day of kindergarten and just never were told to be nice to people?

It’s events like this that make the Republican Party’s claim to be the party of moral rectitude and family values such an absolute joke. Republicans say they’re pro life, but they’re not protecting these children or the children of our own American families. They’re pro birth, of course, but after that you’re on your own. If you’re poor or from a third-world country, it’s your fault anyway. Shoulda just been born in ‘MURICA, home of despicable hatred.

Trump has also been following the script of the “Narcissist’s Prayer” to a tee, refusing to accept responsibility and downplaying his authority and involvement the whole time:

That didn’t happen.

And if it did, it wasn’t that bad.

And if it was, that’s not a big deal.

And if it is, that’s not my fault.

And if it was, I didn’t mean it.

And if I did…

You deserved it.

First it wasn’t happening. Then, the detention centers were summer camps. Then, it was the Democrats that somehow passed a law through a Congress that will barely let the minority party sneeze. And then Trump is “moved” by the pictures, like he didn’t know what was happening. And even so, these families must deserve it, since they’ came here illegally. What a collection of buffoons they are, desperately seeking a better life for their family by any means possible. It’s not like that’s the foundation of the American dream or something.

Even with this change of policy, things aren’t much better. Thousands of children have been separated from their parents, and there’s no system for getting them back. And it’s not like Trump just announced amnesty. It’s unclear what his plan for his favorite straw man is now. It could be even worse then concentration camps, so don’t let them off the hook for this.
