You may have seen the viral video of a tomato being chopping in reverse. Sounds strange, but the video is oddly calming. With more than 45,ooo views, the video is driving people crazy. “Why did I watch that?” “I can’t look away.” Here, see for yourself.
As this chopped tomato went viral, many were left scratching their heads. Turns out there is a completely normal scientific reason why the video is doing so well. The calming clip comes from Lithuanian YouTube channnel, Wryfield Lab. The channel is filled with other trancing clips, such peanuts being shelled and a picture being colored. The unique thing about the videos are they are put into reverse, which may play a role in their soothing capabilities.
The creators of these videos explain that these clips are in the ASMR category. Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response is described as a “strong, static-like tingling sensation on the skin that typically begins on the scalp and moves down the back of the neck and upper spine, precipitating relaxation.”
ASMR videos aren’t anything new either. You might remember a few years ago, there was a surge of videos making rounds on the Internet of people folding towels, popping bubble wrap and whispering to the camera. These are the same type of videos.
ASMR therapist Lauren Ostrowski Fenton explains the conceptof a brain orgasm. While not everyone will experience this sensation, those that do will feel “magic.” Fenton says the calming images help the body release certain chemicals.
“Whether its seratonin, melatonin or OxyContin, it has an effect on people — not everyone — that takes a person back to a childhood memory that’s comforting,” she says.
“If your mother tapped her fingers, brushed your hair, looked into your eyes, those are communication symbols that elicit a response, and when someone has that sensation they relax.”
As for the tomato video, the creator, Linas Lakavicious says he is hooked.
“Because my job is related to video production (I had more than enough gear), the only thing left to do was to create some videos of my own”, he said. “Some of these videos are kinda hypnotic. I never do that intentionally, though, usually I don’t even know exactly what the final result will be during the entire process of creation, whether it turns to be trippy, hallucinogenic, relaxing or all in one. And this is one of the reasons why I like making these weird videos”

Despite all of the science behind his videos, Lakavicious says he find the most enjoyment from creating the videos. His reverse therapy videos are meant to fill the void of high-quality ASMR videos.
“There are too many channels with “beautiful girl lips smacking against microphone” and too few with original, innovative content.”
His oddball style has transformed the ASMR video realm and turned it into something strange and calming. Take a break right now and go check out some of Lakavicious. Nothing says relaxing like un-peeling a tangerine in slow motion and backwards…
