The World’s Top Tweeting City Is …

Twitter is incredibly popular the world-over, but what city is considered the most active in terms of posted tweets?

Victor Lipman, a Forbes contributor, reported on a study which analyzed Twitter’s global usage patterns, and was surprised by his findings. So which city tweets the most? I probably would have guessed New York City, maybe Tokyo. If you guessed either of those, or possibly London, we’d both be close, but not quite there.

So what city tweets the most?

Jakarta, Indonesia.

Random, huh? Following Jakarta are New York City, Tokyo, London, and Sao Paulo. Paris, Los Angeles, and Bandung, Indonesia follow beyond the top five, and even though Bandung and Jakarta have a combined population of about 13 million, Indonesia is not the top country in terms of Twitter use.

No, that honor belongs to the US of A, as our folks simply have the greatest number of accounts. Indonesia just tweets a heck of a lot more than we do. They’re also in the top five countries, along with Brazil, Japan, and the UK.

A few more fun facts: The US has 27 percent of all Twitter users, but that number is declining. San Fransisco, where Twitter is headquartered, isn’t even among the top 20 most active Twitter cities (Twities?). Also, users speaking Arabic are on the rise. Arabic is the 6th most tweeted language.
