We’ve come a long way, haven’t we Internet?
The earliest version of what we now know as the Internet began as a government project back in 1969. In the five decades since, computer networking has evolved to a level beyond anything the Internet’s creators could have ever been intended to become (into a wretched hive of scum and villainy that is almost 70% porn, 29% cats, and 1% useful information).
But let’s take a look at the Internet’s progress, shall we? From Verizon to Sonic internet provider, from DSL to Cable, internet has grown to exponential lengths in this day and age.
The infographic below created by Who Is Hosting This shows how the Internet went from 56K per second to 7.6MB per second, how that bandwidth has been used and how that use has changed over time, and most importantly for our editorial, how social media has taken center stage.
Some highlights from a day in the life of the Internet:
- 700 videos hit the web each minute.
- 28,000 Tumblr posts are published in that same amount of time.
- 100,000 tweets and over 34,000 Facebook “likes” are shared as well.
- Internet traffic is expected to quadruple by 2014.
