The Best Anti-Trump Twitter Accounts: This Is #TheResistance

Anti-Trump users on Twitter

As everyone knows, President Trump adores Twitter. It’s a platform for him to speak to his constituents in an immediate way. There’s a reason his White House aids and advisors hate it: it erases any trace of a filter between Donald and his mouth.

But he’s not the only person who knows how to leverage Twitter as a platform for speaking to the public. Just as Trump has his supporters on Twitter, he also has a vocal contingent of smart, savvy critics (“losers and haters” he would no doubt call them) who answer his missives with a healthy dose of sanity. Known collectively as #TheResistance, they fight for the truth while pressing toward the day when common sense will prevail in American politics.

Here are some of our favorites.

Ted Lieu

It’s not by coincidence that Congressman Ted Lieu is at the top of this list. The Democratic House of Representatives member from California tweets almost exclusively on Donald Trump, seemingly making it his mission in life to speak sense into the President’s nonsense. But don’t underestimate him — he’s not afraid to gleefully (and brilliantly) shut someone down or get sassy all up in their business. This guy is not only a breath of fresh, truthful air, he’s got a wicked sense of humor.

Stephen Colbert

After his show The Colbert Report made him famous, he dropped his on-screen character to become the host of The Late Show on CBS. Audiences weren’t quite sure what to make of this real-world Colbert, but he struck gold when he turned his attention to trolling Donald Trump. He takes the President to task every night on his show, poking fun at the latest ridiculous thing to come out of the White House. His personal Twitter account finds him offering off-the-cuff reactions (as opposed to the scripted jokes he offers on his show) to the unending insanity that is the Trump Administration — and it’s often funnier than what he does on TV.

Caroline Orr

Behavioral scientist Caroline Orr has an uncommonly objective view of truth and justice. She not only walks the talk, she’s actually done hands-on work in exposing Russia’s meddling in the 2016 election. She stands up for facts when Trump and his people peddle “alternative facts,” never letting them get away with creating their own reality. If you care at all about truth and Trump’s abuse of it, Orr is a must-follow.

Emma González

You know her as the outspoken Parkland, Florida student who gave the now-famous “We call B.S.!” speech a few days after Nicholas Cruz murdered 17 people at her high school. In the following weeks, she turned her focus into a fierce campaign to dismantle the NRA and get sensible gun control laws passed, putting her in direct opposition to President Trump. (Also see her fearless classmate David Hogg.) She’s off to a good start: she amassed more followers on Twitter than the NRA in less than two weeks.

Alyssa Milano

Her followers would tell you that Alyssa Milano is the Queen of Twitter. (No offense, but that honor rightfully goes to the hilariously blunt Chrissy Teigen, who incidentally, also despises Donald Trump.) One look at her Twitter account makes it clear why: she’s incredibly prolific with her tweets, and never met a progressive cause she wouldn’t support. Milano has a fiery dislike for everything Trump does, but instead of merely bad-mouthing him, she offers constructive ways of combating his nonsense.

Ana Navarro

Not every Trump critic has to be a liberal. CNN contributor Ana Navarro is a hardcore Republican who sees Trump for what he really is and is having none of it. (You don’t want to be on the receiving end of her righteous anger.) Believing her party has lost its way and been hijacked by an unstable nationalist, she’s particularly sensitive to immigrant issues — and the Donald’s distaste for immigrants. She calls him out daily for his endless contradictions, his dumb ideas, and especially for being the immoral person he is at his core. Her frequent ire at Trump’s supporters rejecting the principles of common sense and human decency is why we love her.

Joy Reid

AMJoy airs Saturdays and Sundays on MSNBC, and its host is the incredibly intelligent, no-nonsense Joy Reid. Her eloquence as a speaker is matched by her grace and prowess as a thinker. Don’t underestimate her based on her sweet demeanor: she tells it exactly like it is. But Reid doesn’t trade in insults or barbs. She lays out the facts for what they are in plain language, reminding us of just how unspeakably ludicrous Trump’s constant mania is.

Joe Kennedy

Just looking at him, you can tell he’s a Kennedy. The grandson of Robert Kennedy, Joe is a Representative from Massachusetts who carries on his family’s legacy with a genuine concern for doing right by the American people. His genteel style is never crude or harsh. He merely says what he believes, and one thing he unequivocally believes is that Donald Trump is not fit to be President.

Mark Ruffalo

It’s no secret that actor Mark Ruffalo is a major political activist. He’s willing to put it all on the line for any cause he believes in, which he does on a daily basis. Aside from fighting for the likes of Greenpeace, net neutrality, and the #MeToo movement, he regularly tweets thoughtful anti-Trump messages and retweets equally fascinating political commentary from others.

Chris Hayes

Another voice from MSNBC, Chris Hayes is the host of weekday newscast All In, and he’s also editor at large for The Nation. A devoted, outspoken liberal with direct ties to the Democratic Party, Hayes focuses on policy above all else. His posts are more retweets than anything else, but he sometimes offers his own take on things, and always with cut-through-the-crap insight.

Adam Schiff

Want to piss off Donald Trump? Follow Congressman Adam Schiff. Anyone that Trump hates to the degree of giving them an insulting nickname is someone you should probably be listening to. It doesn’t hurt that he’s on the Congressional committee investigating Russia’s meddling in the 2016 election. And he’s not afraid to put the President in his place.

Chelsea Handler

The raucous, not-afraid-to-be-vulgar comedienne and talk show host has turned her Twitter account into a personal response to President Trump’s activities. She often answers his tweets directly, as if conversing with him. And it’s always acerbic and on-point.

Evan McMullin

Evan McMullin is an Independent who ran against Trump in the 2016 election. Although he entered the race far too late to make a difference, you couldn’t help but be impressed by his intellect and grasp of the bigger picture. He’s a former CIA agent and hard line patriot who now heads Stand Up Republic, an organization that promotes justice and freedom for people all over the world. So naturally, such an inclusive view of the world goes against Trump’s “America first” nationalism.

Mark Hamill

If Chrissy Teigen is the Queen of Twitter, then Mark Hamill is undoubtedly King. His frequently hysterical posts alternate between geeky fun and acerbic wit that’s usually aimed straight at the President. You probably heard his priceless dramatic reading of one of Trump’s tweets as the Joker (a character Hamill has voiced multiple times for animation and video games). That alone should put him on your radar, but his caution-to-the-wind approach to calling out the President’s juvenile behavior is what keeps us coming back for more.

Brian Krassenstein

Krassenstein is a self-made entrepreneur, a domain name investor (he buys “.com” domain names and resells them for profit) who’s no stranger to controversy. But his observations about Trump and his cronies are undeniably brilliant.

William LeGate

A millennial, entrepreneur, and outspoken activist who tries to make it easy for concerned citizens to take action on major issues with as little muss and fuss as possible.

J.K. Rowling

As the only non-American on this list, we’ll call her an “honorable mention.” But she had to be included. Because while the creator of Harry Potter doesn’t post about Trump often, when she does, it’s eloquently savage on a level no one else can touch.

President Trump versus Mark Cuban: A Twitter War

Warren Michaels
Stupidity should be called by name, especially when it's stupid people in power. You could say that's my life's mission, but I'd like to think I'm a broader guy than that.
