Traditional gaming console game sales have continued to decline over the last several months as the social gaming market continues to grow, albeit slower that it has in the past, yet when it comes to game purchases teen buyers are still seeking high-budget releases.
Analyst firm Piper Jaffray surveyed nearly 7,700 high school students across the United States and found that male teens in particular are still married to their gaming console.
According to an NPD report teens are not just buying games, they are very comfortable downloading big-budget games directly to their console instead of buying the game at a retail location.
The move to purchase gaming console offerings directly to their systems could prove beneficial for social gaming company’s in the future. As teens age out of their consoles they may take the trust they have developed for downloadable content and throw their support behind mobile gaming.
The study in the meantime has found that 25.3 percent of teens asked in the Sprint reported that they play social games, yet in the fall survey that number had fallen to 17.4 percent.
With social media a large part of many gamers lives there is a very real chance that social features could arrive inside of big-budget console games in the future. What those social features will look like are anyways guess.
