Yesterday morning, a 14-year-old tweeted American Airlines saying she was part of “Al Qaida” and was “gonna do something really big” on July 1.
Naturally, the airline responded, and today Dutch police confirmed that the teen was in custody.
From official spokesperson Wessel Stole:
“We’re not in a state that we can communicate any state of charges at this point. We just thought it was necessary to bring this out mostly because of the fact that it caused a great deal of interest on the Internet.”
After American Airlines told the young girl, named Sarah, that she was being reported to security and the FBI, she immediately backtracked by saying “omfg I was kidding,” and several other tweets claiming her innocence.
Sarah blamed the whole incident on her friend, asking the airline to “take her IP address not mine,” but it was far too late at that point.
Considering the girl is a minor, she likely won’t face any jail time, but there’s always the possibility of her parents having to pay a fine for the incredibly stupid act.
Her Twitter account has since been suspended due to the investigation, and let this be a lesson to all that there’s some things you just can’t joke about.
