Stan Wawrinka claimed an upset against Rafael Nadal in the 2014 Australian Open, but many Twitter users saw it differently. That’s because ESPN’s SportsCenter account accidentally announced that Rafael Nadal won in 4 sets with a final score of 6-3, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.
The tweet, published at 5:25 AM ET this morning read:
The team at Awful Announcing took the goof-up as a chance to write the following message:
“It’s easy to see what happened here, whoever was running the SportsCenter account scheduled the Rafa tweet for the middle of the night and then fell asleep because they didn’t want to be up at 5 AM watching tennis.”
Eventually ESPN’s SportsCenter corrected the Australian Open tweet:
Stanislas Wawrinka becomes 2nd Swiss man to win Grand Slam title in #AustralianOpen victory over Rafael Nadal.

Before it was deleted the original tweet had received numerous retweets and favorites.
