Looking at the social sphere, you see Facebook, reddit, Twitter, Instagram, etc., and you honestly can’t remember a time you didn’t have a handle for one or all. In fact, there was another time. There was a whole ‘nother age of social media with networks now all but extinct.

For instance, you remember your old friend Friendster, right? What about MySpace, Xanga, or Digg? Will these social media relics ever rise again?

That’s the subject of today’s infographic which was put together by the creative visual team at whoishostingthis.com. In it, they recalled the first era of social media, the prototype networks we all used, what caused their demise and how they’ve attempted to fight back over the years.

There’s some interesting stuff on the graphic, including highlights and milestones reached by the first social networks (did you know that MySpace had 1 million users in its first year?) as well as various technical and legal issues that plagued the life cycles of these social media prototypes (Xanga held on for as long as it could).
