Child Porn Went Viral On Facebook Because You Don’t Think, You Just Share

Every once in a while, we in the industry wake up to something that reminds us that you’ll never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy than on social media.

This morning, that reminder was a piece of honest-to-goodness child pornography that went viral on websites like Facebook and Twitter.

The video, of unknown origin, apparently showed a grown man sexually abusing an infant girl, according to Gawker. It went viral overnight on Facebook, grabbing as many as 32,000 shares and over 5,000 likes before it was finally removed. To those who shared and liked, I say with absolute prejudice, “shame on you.”

A lot of people complained that the video made it to Facebook in the first place, but honestly, the rate of sharing and liking meant it was apparently spreading faster than Facebook could clean it up. By some estimates, it took as long as eight hours to get the video removed from the site.

Even if you shared it just to point out how sick it was (which it looks like most people did), you’re part of the problem. Like we always always say, “think before you share.”

Facebook released a statement on the controversy, saying that it worked “swiftly” to delete the video. The statement read, in part, “we have zero tolerance for child pornography being uploaded onto Facebook and are extremely aggressive in preventing and removing child exploitive [sic] content.”

Twitter seems to have taken the child porn video the hardest, with tweeps collectively scratching their heads, wondering how the hell this went viral.

So the lesson here is simple. Don’t share every sick fucking piece of garbage you see on Facebook. Report it.
