A House vote for SNAP cuts was lambasted by many Twitter users today, many of whom tweeted under the hashtag #SaveSNAP to protest an initiative that will plunge millions of Americans into food insecurity.
The hashtag #SNAP was also trending in support of preserving the program fully called the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, but often referred to by the somewhat dated term “food stamps.”
While the “great recession” sparked a larger reliance on SNAP, many in the GOP feel the program encourages dependency — despite large numbers of SNAP recipients working while receiving food assistance.
On Twitter, SNAP cuts were decried by lawmakers and general users alike, with the following tweets some of the most popular as the SNAP vote was discussed:

However, not everyone was against SNAP cuts, and those tweeting under the #TCOT hashtag applauded the decision to reduce food stamp assistance to hungry Americans:
Anyone upset about #SNAP cuts, show your outrage by donating to a Food Bank. Unforced charity, what a novel concept. #tcot
