You think Facebook isn’t cool? You’re not alone, as Facebook head honcho Mark Zuckerberg doesn’t think the social network is the cutting edge of hipness either — but he means that in a totally good way.
In a way, Mark Zuckerberg’s comments about Facebook’s coolness or lack thereof are cooler, because in essence, he’s saying the site is past cool.
In an earnings call, the ever-present question of whether Facebook will be effectively unseated by another service (in the manner MySpace was eventually replaced with Facebook) came to issue, and Zuck was nonplussed in his reply — he explained:
People assume that we’re trying to be cool. It’s never been my goal. I’m the least cool person there is! We’re almost 10 years old so we’re definitely not a niche thing any more so that kind of angle for coolness is done for us.
Then he compared the service to electricity or water — which are not particularly cool utilities, but are also by their very nature not going anywhere anytime soon. Sure, Con Ed isn’t cool, but they’ve been around since forever.
The Facebook don added:
“Maybe electricity was cool when it first came out but pretty quickly people stopped talking about it because it’s not the new thing, the real question you want to track at that point is are fewer people turning on their lights because it’s less cool?”
Do you think Facebook isn’t cool anymore and it doesn’t matter, or can another upstart come along and get the whole world tied into their service just as effectively?
