“Shelter Dogs Dangerous”? These Pictures Say Nay

Shelter Dogs

An article from the Roanoake Times ruffled more than a few feathers saying that shelter dogs were dangerous and that rescue centers seemed to have more suspicious and sinister motives than they were letting on.

Although the article targeted pit bulls, it cautioned readers against adopting any kind of shelter pet. There’s a stigma against the particular breed, painting it as a violent, ruthless killer, when in fact, it’s one of the sweetest dog breeds, and is actually quite ideal with children. Sadly, this gentle giant is one that occupies 70% of most shelters, and is one of the most euthanized in Colorado.

To add to the misconceptions, it also shamed the Best Friends Animal Society for being part of the problem for promoting “dangerous” dogs through their campaign to end breed discrimination.

The article was seen by a number of pit bull lovers, and they’ve had it with articles like these. There is absolutely nothing wrong with caring for a pit bull, nor adopting a shelter pet, as the dozens of commenters shared with these pictures:

"My vicious rescue dog. Quite frankly I can't believe we are still alive. Look at that tongue, like she's getting ready to attack. Just terrifying." -- Sharpe Schumman

Clearly, these humans do not comprehend the violence they have wrought on themselves and their families the day they chose to adopt these shelter pets.

"Double whammy: a RVSPCA alumni AND a 'pit bull'. My God, it's amazing that between myself, my husband and our four cats, we've narrowly escaped being a fatality statistic for almost four years of living with this violent, unpredictable creature!" -- Valerie Woodson Lester

That’s right! The monsters! Practically taking home hearth and home!

"Beware of too many snuggles when you're sick or upset. Beware of having your pillow stolen and not much room in your own bed. Beware of a dog that's scared of rain and of his own shadow. Beware of a dog who lets his little brother (a rescue beagle) boss him around. Beware of a sweet, goofy pit who thinks he's a lap dog and might squish you sometimes." -- Brandi Dawson
