Selfies take up a large chunk of online photo sharing, and according to Instagram data analyzed by TIME, the Philippines is the most popular for such photos.
Recently, TIME analyzed over 400,000 Instagram photos with the hashtag #Selfie from January 28 to February 2, and March 3 to 7.
Instagram allows users to tag their photo with a location, and 459 cities ended up making the cut.
The findings were ranked by selfies per 100,000 people, and here were the top 25:
- Makati City and Pasig, Philippines – 258
- Manhattan, New York – 202
- Miami, Florida – 155
- Anaheim and Santa Ana, California – 147
- Petaling Jaya, Malaysia – 141
- Tel Aviv, Israel – 139
- Manchester, England – 114
- Milan, Italy – 108
- Cebu City, Philippines – 99
- George Town, Malaysia – 95
- San Francisco, California – 91
- Oslo, Norway – 89
- Boston, Massachussets – 88
- Newark, New Jersey – 84
- Honolulu, Hawaii – 82
- Baguio, Philippines – 82
- Paris, France – 80
- Denpasar, Indonesia – 75
- Leeds, England – 72
- Las Vegas, Nevada – 72
- Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – 72
- Firenze, Italy – 69
- Copenhagen, Denmark – 69
- Helsinki, Finland – 69
- Washington, D. C. – 66
TIME listed the top 100 cities, and also created an interactive chart with each dot on the map representing a selfie taken over a 10-day period.
However, being that Instagram has just 150 million monthly active users, the actual numbers could be far higher:
“While the metric of “people who take selfies per capita” is far from a perfect measure, it was far and away the most comprehensive means of comparing the 459 world cities that turned up at least 25 individual users in the database. Of course, this measure bakes in more variables than just a penchant for selfies, such as smart phone adoption rates and median income.”
As far as how many selfies also included duck face, that’s another study for another time.
