President Obama’s announcement in support of gay marriage on Wednesday may be historic for an entirely different reason, according to retweetingobama.com, a site that uses the Twitter API to count the number of retweets the presidents message has been retweeted 58,323 times at the time of this post.
Here’s the original message President Obama sent out:
“Same-sex couples should be able to get married.”—President Obama
— Barack Obama (@BarackObama) May 9, 2012
It’s a simple message that has only been surpassed by fast food giant Wendy’s, which received over 100,000 retweets after it offered to pay 50 cents to charity for each retweet sent. However the Wendy’s tweet was a sponsored listing which technically puts it into a category all its own.
Twitter hasn’t denied or confirmed the “most popular” state of President Obama’s gay-marriage support tweet but in any case it is a huge milestone for Twitter, the President and the LGBT community.
