In the aftermath of a truck accident that left eighty pigs dead, PETA wants to erect a roadside memorial to the slain animals.
ETA, or People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, is no stranger to controversy. In fact, generating controversy seems to be part of their MO. But they’re also doing plenty to remind people of the value of non-human life. Yesterday, the organization suggested building a temporary roadside memorial off Route 30 in Pennsylvania to honor 80 pigs who died in a tractor trailer accident.
In typical PETA fashion, they want the memorial to also act as a reminder to passing tractor-trailer drivers “of their responsibility to the thousands of animals they carry to their deaths every year.” The memorial will also encourage passing motorists to “go vegan”.
PETA’s official press release states, in part:
“Animals raised for food are typically crowded onto trucks and transported to the slaughterhouse over many miles through all weather extremes, often without food or water. Those who survive this nightmarish journey have their throats slit, often while they’re still alive. Many remain conscious when they’re plunged into the scalding-hot water of hair-removal tanks or while their bodies are being skinned or hacked apart.”
PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman adds: “PETA hopes to encourage motorists to help make roads safer for everyone by choosing healthy vegan foods and eliminating this dangerous and frightening trip entirely.”
