PETA really hated Joe Namath’s massive fur coat, which the NFL Hall of Famer wore during the coin toss for Super Bowl XLVIII Sunday night. Namath’s massive coat earned him interesting comments on social media, a comparison with Macklemore’s “Thrift Shop” coat, and criticism from the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.
PETA reached out to Namath on Twitter, writing:
Dear @RealJoeNamath, The fur on your massive coat was meant for ANIMALS 🙁 Please consider FAUX! #SuperBowl pic.twitter.com/63TNxttgg8

Several PETA fans also joined in the hate on Namath’s coat.
@RealJoeNamath, that fur coat just doesn’t suit you. You know who it would look great on? The animals who wore it first. @peta

@peta How does Joe Namath sleep at night knowing that to make the fur coat cost innocent animals lives? #shameonhim

Wonder if Joe Namath knows what an idiot he looks like in his disgusting fur coat #SuperBowl #SuperBowlXLVIII @peta

Bleacher Report notes that Joe Namath purchased the infamous fur coat Wednesday from New York City’s Marc Kaufman Furs. Kaufman dished that the coat set the former NFL player back about $3,000. He wore the coat from start to finish on Sunday, but probably had no idea the criticism he would get from wearing it.
