Orkut Attempts To Grow Up, Finally Launches iPhone App

Orkut for iPhone

When Google launched Google+ in 2011 it appeared that the company’s other social network offering Orkut would simply fall by the wayside, however with more than 66 million active users on the network (October 2011 numbers) in both India and Brazil it looks as if Google is giving the network a little bit of love by finally releasing an Orkut iPhone app.

Available now through the iTunes Store the program was announced over at the Orkut Blog and provides pretty much what we would expect from the iPhone app including the ability to view friends’ profiles, look at photos and view updates. Users can also upload photos directly from their mobile phone to Orkut albums.

As users will quickly notice if they used the first Android App version of the Google+ mobile platform the icons are all large pastel buttons that allow for each action to be quickly launched. It looks a little juvenile based on other available mobile social apps but it gets the job done.

It’s still unclear if at any point Google will attempt to mold Orkut and Google+ into a single entity but at this point they seem to have their own active developments which leads me to believe they will remain separate for the time being.
