Are you a fan of Back To The Future II and Marty McFly’s hoverboard? Thanks to the Oculus Rift and the Nintendo Wii Balance Board, you may soon be allowed to ride the hoverboard from the comfort of your own living room.
Developer Kieran Lord, aka Cratesmith, tells Redditors:
“The way I’m imagining the hoverboard physics is slightly different to the BTTF maglev skateboard. It’s more a snowboard with a ‘virtual slope’ of the front/back angle of the board. If that works and feels good the player could just get up a ton of speed and then stomp their back foot to get the same effect as going over a jump ramp.”
Admittedly the demonstration takes a while to start up, but when it does the Back To The Future theme song plays and the hoverboard zooms into action.
Talking about the potential for copyright issues Lord proclaims, “I’m hoping that they don’t just lawyer up. I’m really not opposed to talking to Universal [the film’s distributor] if that’s needed to make this happen.”
Perhaps we can ride a hoverboard before the films fictional October 21, 2015 date arrives.
The YouTube video for the Oculus Rift hoverboard was uploaded on April 17, it has received over 6,000 views, with 73 upvotes and two downvotes.
