It seems America’s favorite pig could be getting her own show. ABC is tossing around ideas of putting Miss Piggy in primetime. Sources say the network has been itching to get a muppet show back on their airwaves since the ending of the syndicated program, “The Muppet Show” back in 1981.
ABC has rounded up big names to give Miss Piggy’s series the star treatment. Co-creator of “The Big Bang Theory”, Bill Prady is reportedly being tasked to write the pilot episode, which will feature Miss Piggy, Kermit and other friends.
Prady is no stranger to the muppet world. In the past, he worked with Muppets creator, Jim Henson. This is his second attempt to revive the popular puppet show.
Other big names on the production team include co-writer, Bob Kushell (Anger Management, 3rd Rock From the Sun) and executive producer, Wilfred’s Randall Einhorn. ABC Studios and Disney-owned Muppet studios will producer the show.
The pilot presentation of the Muppet revival will take place at the May presentation to advertisers. Depending on their reviews, the show could go directly to series.
The Muppet franchise has a long, successful reputation on the both the big and small screens. The Hollywood Reporter wrote extensively about the franchise’s history.
“Created in 1955 by Henson, the original Muppet characters appeared on Sam and Friends from 1955-61 before going on to appear on late-night talk shows and commercials and becoming a regular part of Sesame Street in 1969. The Muppet Show launched on its own as a comedy-variety series and ran from 1976-81, with Kermit serving as the de-facto showrunner on the syndicated series that was produced out of the U.K. The franchise has spawned multiple movies (1979’s The Muppet Movie, 1981’s The Great Muppet Caper, 1984’s The Muppets Take Manhattan) as well as NBC’s 1989 series The Jim Henson Hour.”
Miss Piggy is a household name. Starring in eight films, Miss Piggy has earned millions at the box office. Most recently, “The Muppet’s Most Wanted” grossed more than $800 million around the world.
