Meghan Trainor’s “Dear Future Husband”: Quirky, or Questionable? [Video + Poll]

Husband

Dear future husband,
Here’s a few things
You’ll need to know if you wanna be
My one and only all my life

Dear Meghan, we love you, your adorable catchy beats, and your darling pastel visuals in your videos to itty bitty bits. We loved you in “All About That Bass”, and we sure do love you now in your newest music video for “Dear Future Husband”. You are one of the few artists we know our grandmas will feel tickled pink to bounce to whenever your songs come on the radio.

We love you, Meghan, but there are just a few things we need to talk about in your new song. It’s got the seeds of a problematic thing and complicated feelings coming around — just like with your last hit single — and we need to sit down and have a tête-à-tête on this. Why? Because we love you, that’s why.

“Dear Future Husband” is a list of deal-breakers and deal-makers for her future partner set to a 1950’s cheery colored-domestic bliss aesthetic. Trainor sings about needing her man to “treat her right” — “take me on a date”, “don’t forget the flowers every anniversary”, “buy me a ring” — in return of her being the “perfect wife” — “buy groceries, buy-buy what you need”, “And maybe then I’ll let you try and rock my body right”.

After every fight
Just apologize
And maybe then I’ll let you try and rock my body right
Even if I was wrong
You know I’m never wrong
Why disagree?
Why, why disagree?

You gotta know how to treat me like a lady
Even when I’m acting crazy
Tell me everything’s alright

While it stands as a cute reminder for the partner, we’re also kinda wondering where the parts about”having open and honest communication” and “teamwork” have gone to. It’s beginning to sound a bit like a weird version of a 1950’s Good Wife’s Guide, and we’re not sure that’s entirely all good. (No kidding, check it out here.)

Although that bit with your suitor bringing in pizza gets a nod of approval from us. Yes, pizza is always good.
