A photo of civil rights icon Martin Luther King Jr. wearing a hoodie has gone viral on Twitter just a few days after the George Zimmerman trail verdict was handed down.

Zimmerman, who shot and killed 17-year-old Trayvon Martin last year, was found not guilty by a jury of six on Saturday after about a day and a half of deliberation.

The case has commanded national attention and interest over the past year, and has re-opened racial divides and renewed a call for the repeal of controversial Stand Your Ground laws in several states.

Judging by social media, a lot of people feel pretty crappy about the outcome.

One image that probably best captures the poignancy of the George Zimmerman verdict is this:

As you can see, that’s Martin Luther King Jr. wearing a hoodie, which has become a unifying symbol for supporters of Trayvon Martin and his family.

Former Obama adviser Van Jones first tweeted the image, which was designed by artist Nikkolas Smith.

The Martin Luther King Jr. hoodie picture has received over 1,500 retweets, and has slow-burned its way to viral status since being posted yesterday. You can retweet it by following the embed above.
