Lena Dunham: Instagram Needs More Nipples

Lena Dunham is fighting the good fight. The star of Girls is taking a stand against Instagram’s anti-nipple policy.

Dunham posted a photo of her friend breastfeeding, along with the message: “My @sarahsophief feeding the brand new Dusty. I made the flower crown and she added the flower censor. Wish she didn’t have to cuz the nipple is dope. Instagram, get down with the nipple.”

Instagram doesn’t allow nudity on its site (it does allow almost nudity, just ask Rihanna) but the site does allow breastfeeding photos.

A spokesman told the Huffington Post earlier this year after an account called The Leaky Boob was suspended: “Our policies allow breastfeeding photos on Instagram. However, when our team processes reports, we occasionally make a mistake.”

Breastfeeding is a sensitive subject for social media sites like Instagram. The site wants to make sure that it remains a safe place for family browsing but at the same time it wants to censor the dreaded nipple.

Instagram hasn’t quite perfected its anti-nipple detection radar so an occasional nude photo may slip through the system. Those photos usually draw attention, however, and soon Instagram has them removed. Chrissy Teigen, for instance, posted a nude photo earlier this year but it has since been removed from the site. (Don’t worry, you can still see it here.)

Unfortunately, this system can also lead to the removal of nude statues, photos featuring skimpy clothes, breastfeeding photos and anything else someone might deem inappropriate.
