‘Kate Upton Prom’ Inspires ‘Get Oba To The White House’

Oba Banwo is just a normal guy who dreams of being invited to the White House to meet President Barack Obama.

After the runaway viral success of Jake Davidson’s “Kate Upton Prom Invite,” Oba was inspired to resurrect his own Twitter appeal to the president. Oba Banwo lives in Ontario, Canada, having emigrated from Nigeria in 2009 to begin his college studies (at age 16, no less). He’s currently in his final semester of undergrad at Trent University, and has eyes on attending medical school after that.

But first thing’s first: Oba wants to meet President Barack Obama.

After seeing the success of the Kate Upton prom story, Oba reached out to SocialNewsDaily for a little viral love all his own. He described himself as a “major admirer” of President Obama since his 2008 campaign, and considers him to be his “number one role model.”

“I feel that much more encouraged to go out there and achieve things because he did it as well,” Oba explained.

“I have always wanted to meet him, but I’ve only ever entertained it as an unattainable dream, until last semester. I started noticing the power of things going viral, and how this helped quite a number of people get enough attention to have a goal achieved. And then I thought, ‘Why can’t I try and make this dream viral as well and see what happens?’ And that’s how #GetObatoTheWhiteHouse began.”

Oba has an open Facebook group titled “Get Oba to the White House,” which has about 500 members so far. Doesn’t seem like much, but Davidson’s Kate Upton prom page has about that many “likes” as well, and it looks like he might be headed to prom with the Sports Illustrated cover girl after all.

He has also made a Twitter account, and has reached out to celebrities to help make his dream come true.

“After a period of nothing, I kinda lost some steam,” he admitted. “But today, that dream got re-vamped when I saw that Jake Davidson was successful, so I formed a new action plan today.”

That plan starts at his school, where he is currently getting as many people as he can to take pictures of themselves holding up signs with the hashtag #GetObatoTheWhiteHouse. He is also making videos of people voicing their support for his cause. He wants to take all of that and make a giant slideshow or composite image that he plans to then social everywhere – YouTube, Twitter, etc., in an effort to get someone’s attention.

“I realized that it would be incredibly difficult to meet my role model, but I’ve decided to do something to make it happen. Now, I know this is a very, very long shot, and it is probably absurd, and it may result in nothing. But all I need is one chance of exposure, one opportunity to make this something that’s known, in an effort to get the attention of someone that knows someone that knows Obama, and can help me get that invitation to 1600 Penn.”

You can help Oba realize his dream of getting to the White House by visiting his Facebook page or reaching out to him on Twitter. Also, tweeting the White House, President Obama, Press Secretary Jay Carney, or any celebrity or group you follow with the hashtag #GetObatoTheWhiteHouse couldn’t hurt.

The Kate Upton prom story reminded us how powerful social can be when it comes to making dreams like this come true. Maybe Oba is due for his as well. I now leave it in your hands.
