Jim Irsay Defends Peyton Manning Comments On Twitter

Colts owner Jim Irsay ruffled some feathers earlier this week when he said that he was frustrated that Peyton Manning only managed to win one Super Bowl in Indianapolis.

Irsay said:

“[Tom] Brady never had consistent numbers, but he has three of these. Pittsburgh had two, the Giants had two, Baltimore had two and we had one. That leaves you frustrated. You make the playoffs 11 times, and you’re out in the first round seven out of 11 times. You love to have the Star Wars numbers from Peyton and Marvin [Harrison] and Reggie [Wayne]. Mostly, you love [championships].”

Most people, including Broncos coach John Fox, took Irsay’s comments as an insult to Peyton Manning. It seems like the Colts owner is disappointed that Manning brought the Colts to the Super Bowl 11 times in 13 seasons. It seems like the Colts owner is frustrated that Peyton only won four NFL MVP awards and helped build Lucas Oil Stadium.

Fox said:

“I saw the comments [from Irsay] and to be honest with you I thought it was a bit of a cheap shot. To me, in my opinion, they were disappointing and inappropriate. I mean, Peyton would never say anything. He’s too classy to do that. But they sounded a little ungrateful and unappreciative to me for a guy that has set a standard, won a Super Bowl, won division titles, won four MVP awards. I’d be thankful with that one Super Bowl ring because there’s a lot of people that don’t have one.”

Irsay responded to Fox and his other critics today on Twitter. The Colts owner said that he was surprised that people took his comments as a slight to Peyton. Irsay said that he was trying to say that the Colts should have provided Peyton with more support in order to win more championships.

Irsay then took a few swipes at NFL reporter Chris Mortenson for releasing a “misleading” report about Peyton and Andrew Luck.

Peyton Manning isn’t the type of guy to respond publicly to trash talk but he will send a message this weekend on the field. Manning will be honored by Jim Irsay and the Indianapolis Colts shortly before taking the field at Lucas Oil Stadium with the Denver Broncos.
