Facebook previously only allowed teens ages 13 to 17 to share posts with friends, but starting today, they now have the option to share publicly.
By default, new teens signing up on the social network will have their posts automatically set to “Friends.”
Similar to when any other user goes to post publicly for the first time, Facebook will display an extra notification reminding teens:
Teens can also now turn on the “Follow” function, enabling anyone to see their updates in the News Feed without having to friend them.
Here’s what Facebook had to say:
Teens are among the savviest people using social media, and whether it comes to civic engagement, activism, or their thoughts on a new movie, they want to be heard. While only a small fraction of teens using Facebook might choose to post publicly, this update now gives them the choice to share more broadly, just like on other social media services.
As if parents didn’t already have enough to worry about, it’s worth mentioning that any Facebook posts shared publicly can be seen by anyone, not just friends, through Graph Search.
