James Franco has been a hot topic on social media the past 24 hours after alleged Instagram messages revealed he tried hooking up with a 17-year-old.
We here at Social News Daily maintained a healthy skepticism considering said messages occurred on April Fools, but it turns out this wasn’t a big prank after all.
Today, Franco appeared on Live With Kelly and Michael to chat about the whole mishap, and here’s what he had to say:
“I’m embarrassed. I guess I’m just a model about how social media is tricky. It’s a way people meet each other today, but what I’ve learned is you don’t know who’s on the other end. I used bad judgment and I learned my lesson.”
The exchange started after the teen recorded an Instagram video of the actor at an autograph signing in New York City.
Being an avid user of the photo and video sharing app himself, Franco later saw he was tagged, followed the girl and then initiated a private conversation.
However, he should have known better than to expect a 17-year-old would just keep quiet after nearly getting seduced by one of Hollywood’s biggest movie stars.
“Unfortunately in my position, not only do I have to go through the embarrassing rituals of meeting someone, but if I do that, then it gets published for the world so it’s doubly embarrassing.”
It’s worth repeating that Franco didn’t do anything wrong legally since New York’s legal age of consent is 17.
In this case, James Franco simply pulled a classic mistake all guys have made at some point: Thinking with the wrong head.
