The tech space is full of great thinkers, and very few have been lucky enough to become one of almost 1500 billionaires worldwide.
A new infographic from WhoIsHostingThis.com examines seven different tech billionaires, and how they’ve spent their money.
Founder and CEO of Oracle, Larry Ellison has pledged to donate at least half of his wealth, and since launching The Ellison Medical Research Foundation which helps support biomedical research, he’s contributed over $300 million to the cause.
In June 2013, Ellison reportedly acquired 98 percent of Hawaiian island Lanai for $500 million.
Aside from working on wild ideas like delivery drones, Amazon Founder and CEO Jeff Bezos donated $2.5 million to support same-sex marriage, $15 million for brain research at Princeton University and $10 million to the Museum of History Industry.
In August 2013, Bezos acquired The Washington Post for $250 million, and also spent $42 million to build a clock that will last 10,000 years.
Google Co-Founder Sergey Brin has donated over $130 million to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, and in 2011 donated $500,000 to the Wikimedia Foundation. Recently, Brin invested $330,000 to help develop the world’s first synthetic beef patty.
Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Facebook, pledged to give $100 million to Newark, New Jersey schools in 2010, and like Ellison, pledged to donate at least half of his wealth. Facebook donated nearly $500 million worth of stock to the Silicon Valley Community Foundation, and in October 2013, Zuckerberg reportedly bought four surrounding homes for $30 million to protect his privacy.
Paul Allen is a Microsoft Co-Founder, and through his Family Foundation, has given over 3,000 grants totaling in excess of $400 million. He also founded the Allen Institute for Brain and Science, and in 2012 donated $300 million. In 2003, Allen acquired an extravagant yacht for $200 million that reportedly costs $20 million per year to run.
Elon Musk is only one of two people to have founded three multi-billion dollar companies, and is currently known for his work at Tesla Motors and SpaceX. Musk has also pledged to donate half of his wealth, and in areas affected by natural disasters, he plans on donating around $10 million to help build solar power systems.
Google Chairman Eric Schmidt and his wife donated $15 million to build a new park at Governors Island in New York City, and the couple also donated $500,000 to the National Ocean Sciences Bowl. In July 2013, Schmidt spent $15 million on a New York City penthouse, and reportedly had it soundproofed to give him more privacy.
