How Schools And Students Are Using Pinterest [Infographic]

Pinterest has millions of active users and a new infographic by WorldWideLearn and Quinstreet shares how schools and students are leveraging the platform for their own goals.

From March 2011 through March 2012 the number of unique Pinterest visitors grew by 4,377 percent. The study found that an average visitor spends 98 minutes per month pinning, repinning, and engaging in other Pinterest activities. Educators and students are taking advantage of this visual platform in several different ways:

  • Sharing quotes and inspiration
  • Visual sharing for photography, design, art, and architecture classes
  • Suggesting reading materials
  • Encourage participation
  • Showcasing students’ work
  • Critiquing others’ work

At Missouri University, an assistant design professor pins examples of well-designed posters, packaging, advertisements, and more. Being more creative with an assignment, a journalism student at Minnesota State University created a board on food allergies that includes stories, recipes, and tips.

Over 350 boards were found on Pinterest with the name “lesson plans.” Over 400 were found with the keyword “classroom” and over 450 with the keyword “teacher.”

Many colleges are using boards to connect with students. The University of Oregon has a board just for their mascot and football uniforms. With 23 different boards, the University of Oklahoma takes Pinterest pinning very seriously, well, aside from the baby pictures.

Drake University has fun with its bulldog mascot and has a board dedicated to pictures of bulldogs. Looking to makeover your dorm room? Want some southern cooking tips? The University of Mississippi has you covered.
