If you’re a fan of The Godfather trilogy, HBO has some good news for you. Last month, they quietly announced they’d be airing a version of the classic gangster saga that nobody has seen before. Dubbed “The Godfather Epic,” it’s a seven and half hour spectacle featuring never-before-seen footage and deleted scenes.
IndieWire has more:
“Running 424-minutes long, this newly remastered version of ‘The Godfather’ and ‘The Godfather Part II’ features scenes cut from the theatrical release, with both movies re-edited into chronological order.”
Believe it or not, this isn’t actually the first time a linear, chronological version of the film has been shown on television. In 1977, a similar version aired on NBC. It was titled “The Godfather: A Novel For Television.” Unfortunately, all of the sex and violence that helps to tell Francis Ford Coppola’s masterpiece story so well.
In 1981, Paramount released the uncensored version of the television film on VHS. In 1992, they added the ever contentious “The Godfather Part III” and released it as a box set titled “The Godfather Trilogy.” AMC also showed a version of this cut, but with hours worth of commercial breaks.
This version of The Godfather series is all new, however, and contains some never before seen footage that shows the classic story in a new light. Better clear 7.5 hours off your schedule. Oh, and buy a ridiculous amount of popcorn.
