HBO To Offer Standalone Streaming Service Next Year

Cord cutters rejoice! Starting next year, you will no longer need an expensive cable subscription to get HBO. The network announced today that it will be offering a standalone streaming service in 2015. No cable subscription required.

Richard Plepler, the chief executive of HBO, said that the network will reach millions of new people with the new standalone service.

Plepler said: “That is a large and growing opportunity that should no longer be left untapped. It is time to remove all barriers to those who want HBO. So, in 2015, we will launch a standalone, over-the-top, HBO service in the United States. We will work with our current partners.  And, we will explore models with new partners.  All in, there are 80 million homes that do not have HBO and we will use all means at our disposal to go after them.”

Plepler didn’t give too many more details about the plan. We don’t know what a subscription will cost and we don’t exactly when the service will be available.

This is great news for people who love shows like Game Of Thrones and True Detective but are unwilling to pay for a cable subscription. Of course, it’s bad news for companies like Comcast who rely on channels like HBO to bring in customers.

Are you excited for HBO’s new standalone streaming service?
