This week Google+ updated their user interface in order to make link posts stick out in the stream, adding bold titles and larger images. The change resembles Facebook’s method of handling posts that have links in them.
Link-based posts now include a large thumbnail image that is as wide as the entire post, it includes a tiny snippet of text and if the source has a Google+ page a link will be included to it.
This is a significant change compared to the old design, where thumbnails were just small squares and only included a headline.
According to reports, the change was reversed over the weekend and then re-implemented. The change appears to be permanent now.
The new thumbnails appear to work better when the post has a ‘featured image’ which a web page can designate particularly with Content Management Systems such as WordPress or similar platforms.
In the future those who have welcomed the new change to the stream are hoping that the featured image function changes to become more user friendly, and that new thumbnails will trigger with all links just as on Facebook.
