Google Snaps Up PostRank, Part of Social Strategy Penance?

Earlier this week, we posted about Google’s regrets in parlaying its search engine prowess into social media power. (We will refrain from the obligatory rehash of the massive, flaming disaster that was Google Buzz.)

Google’s fortunes in the social media realm could be set to change, with the announcement today that the company has acquired social engagement analytics service PostRank. Terms of the deal- cost and such- have not yet been released, but PostRank confirmed the purchase excitedly on their homepage:

We know that making sense of social engagement data is crucial for online businesses, which is why we’ve worked hard to monitor where and when content generates meaningful interactions across the web. Indeed, conversations online are an important signal for advertisers, publishers, developers and consumers — but today’s tools only skim the surface of what we think is possible.

We’re proud of what we’ve accomplished, and we now look forward to working with Google’s team to build more useful tools for measuring engagement online, and we’ll be sure to share details on our progress in the coming months

In a blog post, PostRank details a bit more about the purchase and confirms the team will be moving to Mountain View. Coming just a day after the launch of the +1 button by Google, do you think the company is doubling down on social engagement on the web? Have they got a shot of gaining ground against Facebook and Twitter socially?
